New changes to the National School Lunch Program

All Sumner County middle- and high-school menus are planned on a centralized basis

in accordance with the

Did you know there were benefits to eating breakfast?

     Eating breakfast can help improve MATH, READING, AND STANDARIZED TEST SCORES. i,ii,iii.

     Children who eat breakfast are more likely to behave better  in school and get along with their peers than those who do not.  iv,v.

     Breakfast helps children pay attention, perform problem-solving tasks, and improves MEMORY. vi,vii

     Children who eat SCHOOL BREAKFAST are likely to have FEWER ABSENCES and INCIDENTS OF TARDINESS than those who do not. viii

     By eating breakfast, students get more of important nutrients, vitamins and minerals such as calcium, dietary fiber, folate and protein. ix, x

     Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast on a REGULAR BASIS are LESS LIKELY to be OVERWEIGHT. xi, xii, xiii

     Eating breakfast as a child is important for establishing healthy habits for later in life.

     Schools that provide breakfast in the classroom to all students have shown decreases in tardiness and suspensions as well as improved student behavior and attentiveness. xiv, xv

     What you eat for breakfast can have an impact on learning. One study showed that eating breakfast food high in fiber and low in sugar for breakfast helped students sustain the cognitive effects of breakfast. xvi

     SCHOOL BREAKFAST provides 1/4 the recommended amounts of protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C for the day.   xvii.

USDA REGULATIONS ON NONDISCRIMINATION 7(CFR,PARTS 15a & 15b)

In the Code of Federal Regulations, which apply to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (7CFR), parts 15 and 15a prohibits discrimination of any recipient because of eligibility for free or reduced meals. These parts of the regulations refer to education programs or activities receiving or benefiting from federal financial assistance.

7CFR part 15b stipulates eight (8) areas with which each recipient receiving federal funds must comply in providing services to disabled individuals. The areas are as follows:

1) Assurance agreement to operate a food service program in compliance with all requirements of   USDA regulations.

2) Designation of a 504 coordinator.

3) Establishing a complaint/grievance procedure.

4) Public notification to receipients, applicants, employees, and compaines/agencies with whom business is conducted of nondiscrimination.

5) Remedial Voluntary Action Self Evaluation is required, if discriminatory acts are found.

6) An entity must make reasonable accommodation in regards to mental or physical disabling conditions.

7) The operating system must be accessible to and usable by qualified disabled persons.

8) Food services must be provided to disabled persons including special meals at no extra charge in the most integrated setting appropriate to the needs of disabled persons.

These eight (8) areas may be applied to the nutrition education program encompassing all students; developing such a comprehensive effort would ensure that nondiscriminiation regulations applied to all individuals whether program employees or recipients of nutrition education services.

Letters of notification and all other forms of communication to program recipients households, such as menus, notices for special events, etc should contain a nondiscrimination statement:
